BIHAR SPEEDS UP REVIVAL OF CLOSED SUGAR MILLS; NEW PLANT LIKELY AT CHANPATIA

BETTIAH: THE Bihar government has accelerated efforts to revive closed
sugar mills, raising hopes for farmers and local employment. As part of this
initiative, a detailed inspection of the closed sugar mill at Chanpatia was
carried out on Tuesday following directions from the state’s sugarcane
industry department, Bhaskar reported.
A team from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited
(New Delhi), led by Dr. R. B. Dole, conducted the inspection. District
Sugarcane Officer Remant Jha was also present during the visit. The team
assessed the mill premises, its assets, and nearby areas to evaluate the
feasibility of reviving the unit or setting up a new sugar mill.
After the inspection, the federation’s Chief Advisor, Dr. Dole, said that the
existing mill is not in a condition that can be repaired. He indicated that a
recommendation would be sent to the government for setting up a new sugar
mill at the site.
According to officials, a detailed cane feasibility report will now be prepared
based on the inspection findings. The future course of action will be decided
only after this report is completed. The department has directed concerned
officials to provide all necessary data and technical inputs to support the
study.
The move has generated optimism in the region. If a new mill is established,
it is expected to provide better market access for sugarcane farmers and
create employment opportunities at the local level.
Several officials and local representatives, including Technical Advisor
Murlidhar Chaudhary, Deputy Technical Advisor S. Somasundaram, Ashok
Kumar Ojha, Rajan Sahu, Nathuni Das, and Kamlesh Kumar, were present
during the inspection.
